Khadija Ismayilova awarded UNESCO World Prize
A convicted Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova was awarded the UNESCO / Guillermo Cano World Award for her contribution to the cause of press freedom. This prize was awarded "for outstanding contribution to the development of press freedom under difficult circumstances."
"Khadija Ismailova is highly worthy of this award, and I'm glad that her courage and professionalism have been appreciated," said chairman of the jury Liliana Zurovak.
In a message posted on the UN website also notes that the award ceremony will take place on May 3 in Finland within the framework of the International Press Freedom Day celebration.
The prize of $25,000 for the UNESCO contribution to the freedom of the press is named after Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano, who exposed the Colombian drug lords. He was shot in 1987.
Journalist of Azerbaijani service of "Radio Liberty" , Khadija Ismayilova was arrested in December 2014, and subsequently sentenced to 7.5 years in prison on charges of economic crimes. She and international human rights activists believe that she is being persecuted for the investigation of the involvement of the Azerbaijani ruling elite in corruption. -06D--
