Lawyer denies reports on death of Eldar Mahmudov
Baku/02.03.22/Turan: Former head of Azerbaijani National Security Ministry Eldar Mahmudov has died, E-huquq.az website reported.
According to the same source, Mahmudov died last night of heart failure.
However, Makhmudov's lawyer Javid Rzazadeh told Turan that "reports of Makhmudov's death are not true.
Makhmudov was born in 1956.
He served in the Interior Ministry between 1980 and 2004.
Between 1993 and 2003. Makhmudov headed the department for combating economic crime, the successor to the notorious Soviet "OBHSS".
In 2004 Makhmudov was appointed head of the Ministry of National Security and brought former police officers to the top of the security services. During Makhmudov's years in charge of the MNS, the practice of blackmailing and extorting businessmen became widespread.
In 2015, the MNS was abolished and many of its department heads and other officials ended up behind bars. Makhmudov himself escaped arrest; however, he was repeatedly summoned for investigation.
