Lerik Court Sentences Editor to Fine
Baku / 29.11.19 / Turan: Lerik district court upheld the claim of the former head of the Salyan region Tahir Karimov against the editor of the AzToday.az website Elmidar Aliyev, obliging him to pay 2,000 manats to the former official as compensation for moral damage.
The journalist does not agree with the decision of the court, whose sitting lasted 15 minutes. Judge Atabek Kichibekov did not even hold preparatory hearings and did not consider the defendant’s protest.
The reason for the lawsuit was the publication of “Karimov’s Wealth in London - the Former Head of the Executive Branch Took a Million Abroad.”
The judge ordered the refutation of the information contained in the article to be published.
“When the judge asked where I got data on companies and real estate of Tahir Karimov’s children, I called the websites of the registry structures of the United Kingdom. But the impression was that the judge had no idea about modern media and did not check the published data.
The journalist intends to file an appeal. –06D-
