Media Review February 11, 2019
A look at the increase in the minimum wage and the reasons for the extension of the full deposit insurance of the population are the leading topics of today's media.
The newspaper Azerbaijan writes about the increase in the minimum wage from 136 to 180 manat by the decree of President Ilham Aliyev. This is regarded as another important step in enhancing social protection, since the minimum wage and the minimum subsistence level were equalized. This decision will cover 600 thousand people, of whom 450 thousand work in the public sector, and 150 thousand in the private sector. The main goal is to bring the minimum salary to 60% of the average monthly salary.
The website Strateq.az regards raising the minimum wage to the subsistence level as an official confirmation of the existence of poverty in the country. Experts note that from 2006 to 2018, the minimum wage increased annually by 10-15 manat. The minimum wage is not an indicator of increasing incomes of ordinary citizens. It expresses the minimum wage limit of employees in the public and private sectors.
180 manat is the monthly level of payment for utility costs, so there is nothing to rejoice here, the author notes. It turns out that 450 thousand from 900 thousand workers of state structures receive the minimum salary. Without knowing it themselves, the authorities confirmed the real picture of poverty in the country.
The newspaper Yeni Musavat writes about the extension of the full insurance payment period for another year. The decision on full deposit insurance was made on March 4, 2016 for a period of three years. This year it has expired.
Experts believe that the government had no other way out, because the situation in banks remains unsatisfactory. In the banking sector there is a shortage of liquidity. The shortage of finance persists, since the issue with loans has not been resolved.
