Mingachevir Resident Arrested for Treason
Baku / 11.02.19 / Turan: The State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan detained Mingechevir city resident Anar Alakbarov on suspicion of treason.
The State Security Service reports that in March 2016, Anar Alakbarov was abroad, where he was attracted by secret services of some country to secret cooperation for money. He was instructed to collect information about the citizens of Azerbaijan who have trade relations abroad and bring them into contact with the special services under the guise of business relations.
He was also instructed to collect information on employees of the special services of Azerbaijan, representatives of a number of foreign embassies in Azerbaijan, and military units.
In the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Anar Alakbarov sent information collected by him to foreign intelligence services through a secure, as it seemed to him, mobile Internet application. Numerous other evidence on the case were also collected, and Alakbarov confessed to his actions. He was prosecuted under Article 274 (high treason) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan and arrested by a court decision.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has invited Azerbaijani economist and political prisoner Professor Gubad Ibadoglu to Strasbourg to attend the 2024 Sakharov Prize award ceremony. The invitation, delivered by Member of the European Parliament Michael Bloss at the COP29 climate conference, comes as Ibadoglu remains under house arrest and prohibited from leaving Azerbaijan.
