Parviz Hashimli : I was tortured in the MNS
Yesterday the Baku Court of Grave Crimes chaired by Novruz Karimov continued preliminary hearing on the case of the journalist Parviz Hashimli and Tavakkul Gurbanov accused of smuggling and illegal arms trade.
According to the lawyer Elchin Sadigov, the defense applied for replacement of arrest by house arrest.
Furthermore, the defense demanded recognition of the violation of Hashimli's rights on the part of the investigation and adjudication of the illegal conduct of the investigative prison director, Zaur Binnayev.
The counsel also requested to return the case to the prosecutor for further investigation and to allow audio and video recording by journalists.
The defense also petitioned to transfer Hashimli to the Prison Service custody and to view the records of the surveillance cameras in the MNS jail. The judge rejected all these petitions.
The journalist said that he was tortured in the MNS.
"They put a black bag on my head and kept it for hours. Your Honour, if they did so to you, would not you feel offended?" said the journalist. In response, the judge issued a warning to Hashimli .
The journalist said that he wrote 30 complaints to the Attorney General, the President's Administration and others from prison, but none of them was sent. He called the charges against him contrived.
The preparatory meeting will be continued on March 7.
Hashimli was arrested on September 17, 2013 on charges of smuggling and illegal arms trade. He said the charges were politically motivated. The relatives of the journalist said that he was required to publish revelatory articles against the PFPA leader Ali Kerimli, but he refused and now he is being punished for that. -16D06 -
