Aslan Gurbanov
Baku/04.05.21/Turan: The Public Council of Talysh of Azerbaijan (PCTA) condemned the imprisonment of blogger Aslan Gurbanov for 7 years.
Gurbanov, who was engaged in the promotion of the language and culture of the Talysh people on social networks, was detained by law enforcement on July 14, 2020, the statement of the PCTA.
After a long investigation, on April 15, 2021, the Baku Serious Crimes Court found Aslan Gurbanov guilty under the Articles 281.2 (incitement to national, racial, social or religious hatred and enmity) of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to 7 years in prison.
According to the PCTA, the charge was built based on Gurbanov's Facebook and WhatsApp correspondence. The investigation was not fair, and the rights of Gurbanov, the witnesses questioned in the case, the members were subjected to psychological, court sessions were often held without legal grounds. “The trial and the verdict were unfair and unfounded,” the PCTA statement said.
The organization regards the Gurbanov case as a "show trial" to intimidate other people who take of their native language and culture. PCTA requires the authorities to end all forms of discrimination against their citizens. - 06B-
