PFPA activist E.Hasanov attempted suicide in jail
On June 21, activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) Elnur Hasanov attempted suicide in Baku pre-trial detention center-1, his lawyer Neymat Kerimli told Turan. According to him, Hasanov broke a window in the sanitary and medical part of the pre-trial detention center and cut his veins with a piece of glass. After the intervention of doctors, the threat to life has passed. He had five stitches, Kerimli said. According to him, Hasanov had been on a dry hunger strike for 7 days before his suicide attempt. This was his third dry hunger strike in the last 2 months, the lawyer recalled.
Hasanov protested against the illegal arrest, unjustified prolongation of his trial, and beating him in the courthouse by guards. He stopped his hunger strike at the request of the leadership of the PFPA, a group of family members of martyrs, the lawyer stressed.
*Elnur Hasanov was arrested on November 28, 2023 on charges of drug trafficking (Article 234.4.3 of the Criminal Code). The activist believes that the real reason for his arrest is criticism of the actions of the Traffic Police leadership. Human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.
