PFPA activist sentenced to 4,5 years in prison
Baku/07.08.20/Turan: Today, the Narimanov Court of Baku, under the chair of Vusal Gurbanov, ruled the verdict to Pasha Umudov, a member of the Popular Front Party and the driver of the party leader Ali Karimli.
The court sentenced him to 4.5 years in prison, finding him guilty under the Article 234.2 (illegal drug trafficking for the purpose of sale) of the Criminal Code, said his lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova.
The defense disagreed with the verdict, and will appeal it to the Court of Appeal.
“We asked for Umudov's excuse. The prosecutor asked for five years, and the judge appointed 4.5 years in prison,” Sadigova said.
Umudov was detained on the eve of the National Council rally on October 19, 2019.
In his closing remarks at the trial, he called the accusation absurd. “It is absurd to accuse a PFPA member of carrying drugs in his pocket on the eve of the rally, when there were mass arrests of activists. This is a political case and the court is executing the order,” Umudov said. -03B06-
