Baku / 16.06.17 / Turan: Today in the Baku Grave Crimes Court the trial on the case of Fuad Ahmadli, the activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was completed.

At today's meeting, the lawyer Asabali Mustafayev and Fuad Ahmadli himself made final speeches. The lawyer stated that the criminal case was fabricated. The investigation did not provide reliable evidence. The trial was also biased. Of the nine petitions of the defense, only one was granted that was of a technical nature.

Ahmadli himself said he was being persecuted for political reasons. However, no criminal case will break him and other PFPA activists and they will continue the struggle for freedom and democracy.

After the meeting, the court announced a verdict. The court re-qualified the charge under Article 308.2 (abuse of official powers, which entailed grave consequences) into the first paragraph of this article (abuse of power), citing the fact that the "victims" have no material claims against Ahmadli.

Nevertheless, the court sentenced the activist to 4 years in prison.

Earlier, the prosecutor asked to sentence him to 7 years of imprisonment.

The defense intends to appeal the verdict.

Recall that Ahmadli was arrested in August 2016. He was accused of the fact that, being an operator of the mobile Nar network, he gave away personal data of the users.

However, during the trial, these accusations were not confirmed and the persons recognized by the investigation as "victims" did not make any claims to the defendant.

One of the "victims," Muhammad Guliyev was wanted by the police on charges of fraud, and the testimony of such a person did not inspire confidence, the lawyer Asabali Mustafayev said. -06D-
