PFPA claims torture of Niyameddin Ahmadov
Baku/17.06.22/Turan: Activist of the Popular Front Party Niyamaddin Ahmadov, held in jail N 12, was subjected to physical pressure and torture, the PPFA reported.
“He was beaten, shorn and kept in a punishment cell for several days. After returning to the general barracks, Ahmadov was reprimanded, threatened with tougher punishment - sending him to the covered Gobustan prison,” the PFPA reported.
The Penitentiary Service could not be reached for comment.
Ahmadov was the bodyguard of the leader of the PFPA Ali Karimli on a voluntary basis. He was detained on April 16, 2020 on charges of violating the quarantine regime and resisting the police, and was arrested for 30 days.
Later Ahmadov was charged with financing terrorism, citing the receipt of money from abroad as the reason. While under arrest, he was tortured for not testifying against Ali Karimli, the leader of the party. However, he did not testify. On October 8, 2021, the court sentenced him to 13 years in prison. On March 2, the Baku Court of Appeal upheld the verdict.
Human rights activists recognized Ahmadov as a political prisoner. --16В06--
