Prison Service confirms Afghan Mukhtarly's hunger strike
Baku/09.23.19/Turan: On September 22, journalist Afgan Mukhtarly officially notified the leadership of colony number 6 about the beginning of the hunger strike, Turan was told in the public relations department of the Prison Service.
The department noted that Mukhtarly began a hunger strike on September 23 and, in accordance with the rules, he will be isolated from other prisoners.
According to the same source, Mukhtarly"s state of health is normal.
In turn, the wife of the journalist Leyla Mustafayev said that her husband was starving for the second day. He suffers from diabetes, and refuses to take medication.
Mukhtarly"s statement about the beginning of a hunger strike in protest against physical pressure on his lawyer Neymat Karimli and violation of the confidentiality of his notes was circulated the day before.
** Investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarli was abducted in May 2017 in Tbilisi, secretly transported to Azerbaijan and arrested. Subsequently, the court sentenced him to 6 years in prison on charges of smuggling and violence against the border guard.
Amnesty International recognized Mukhtarly as a "prisoner of conscience." -B06-
