Supreme Court Leaves Fuad Ahmedli Imprisoned
Baku / 03.03.20 / Turan: On March 3, the Supreme Court chaired by Aziz Seidov examined the complaint of the Popular Front Party (PFPA) activist Fuad Ahmedli about the refusal of parole. Ahmedli himself was not involved in the process.
Judge Seyidov said that according to documents submitted from the colony, Ahmedli does not comply with the rules of the regime. However, the lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova pointed out the political motives for the persecution of Ahmedli.
“He is recognized by Amnesty International as a “prisoner of conscience”, and local human rights activists as a political prisoner. The institution where he is being held has a bad attitude towards all political prisoners,” Sadigova said.
He also pointed to a presidential decree on the humanization of punishment, which recommended that the courts not impose severe sentences not on serious crimes.
However, the court dismissed Ahmedli's complaint.
The activist’s father Zafar Ahmedov believes that the authorities decided to keep his son in custody. As for the characteristics issued by the colony, it does not reflect reality.
“Fuad in prison translated a book from English into Azerbaijani, conducts English courses, and teaches prisoners. He did not violate the rules of the regime, he simply claims his rights,” said his father.
* Fuad Ahmedli was arrested in August 2016 on charges of "violating the law on operative-search activities" and disseminating personal information of users of Azerfon mobile phones. In addition, he was charged with abuse of authority.
He was sentenced to 4 years in prison on June 16, 2017. The Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court later upheld the verdict. Human rights activists have recognized Ahmedli as a political prisoner.
In May 2019, the Surakhani District Court rejected Ahmedli’s appeal for release on parole in connection with the serving of more than half the sentence. Higher authorities upheld this decision. Until the end of the sentence of the activist, 10 months remain. -03B06-
