Supreme Court to Consider Ikram Rahimov’s Complaint
Baku / 03.12.19 / Turan: A cassation appeal by the editor of the reallig.info website, Ikram Rahimov, will be examined by the Supreme Court on December 18. His relatives told Turan that the editor remains spirited and hopes that the Supreme Court will restore justice.
Ikram Rahimov is known for harsh criticism of the former assistant to the President on socio-political issues Ali Hasanov and his entourage. He wrote about abuses in the distribution of financial assistance to the media and apartments for journalists.
Rahimov was arrested in October 2018 a few hours after the publication of an open letter criticizing Hasanov.
On June 12, 2018, Rahimov was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison. In protest, he began a hunger strike, which he stopped on the 30th day - September 5th.
On September 18, the Court of Appeal confirmed Rahimov’s guilt of extortion by means of threats, but by applying article 62 of the Criminal Code (the imposition of a lesser punishment prescribed by law), his prison term was reduced to 3 years.
The sentence to Rahimov was condemned by a number of international journalistic organizations. -06D-
