Baku/24.06.17/Turan: Today, on June 24, opposition parties and youth organizations visited the grave of the former President Abulfaz Elchibey in the Alley of Honor.

Elchibey, who passed away in 2000, would have turned 79 today. Today, the International Press Center hosted the presentation of the book Elchibey, authored by Agil Samedbeyli, Ph.D., son-in-law of the leader of the national liberation movement of the 80-90-s.

The book is devoted to the annual rule of Elchibey, who came to power as a result of the first direct free elections and headed the Popular Front government in 1992-93.

"Elchibey's government was doomed to failure, because it took the course to conduct an independent national policy both from Russia and from other states whose interests intersected in the region," said Samadbayli.

He noted that in the overthrow of the democratic government, Russian and Iranian imperial circles, US and British oil companies, such as AMOCO and BP, interested in Azerbaijani oil and interested in obtaining favorable conditions for themselves, were interested in it.

He also noted the treacherous role of Turkey, whose government once again placed its narrowly political interests above the national interests of the fraternal Azerbaijani people.

The book is based on chronicle facts and reveals some white spots of that period, said Samadbayli, emphasizing the treacherous anti-national role of the Soviet-Communist nomenclature, who wanted to get revenge.

The work also places special emphasis on the reforms carried out in the sphere of finance, education, culture, social sphere, economy, military construction, diplomacy and others, which laid the foundation for an independent Azerbaijani state.

Companions of the ex-president, who were in the country's top leadership, as well as military commanders, expressed their thoughts on the rule of Elchibey.

"We are sure that the re-creation of the state serving the interests of the Azerbaijani people will certainly happen as a necessity in the near future," said Panah Huseynov, who worked as the head of government in the administration of Elchibey. -0-
