Afgan Mukhtarly Not Given Meeting with Activists

Baku / 24.06.17 / Turan: Afgan Mukhtarly was not allowed to meet with a journalist in the Kurdakhany detention center. Turan was informed about this by the youth activist Samir Assadli. According to him, several youth activists came to the detention center today to meet with Mukhtarly.

"Afgan's family gave us a power of attorney to meet with him, to give him food and medicine. This power of attorney gives us the full right to meet with him. However, once again we were not allowed to see Afgan," Assadli said.

A week ago, activists were not given a meeting with Mukhtarly either. The management of the detention center referred to the absence of a letter from the investigator. The latter informed the activists that he sent the letter. Now they say in the pre-trial detention center that they have not yet received the letter Assadli said.

In the jail they also did not take an electric stove for Mukhtarly.

* Mukhtarly was abducted in Tbilisi on May 29 and handed over to the authorities of Azerbaijan. The journalist was accused of illegally crossing the border, smuggling and using violence against a border guard.

Last week, the European Parliament adopted a resolution demanding the release of Mukhtarly. -06B-
