Baku / 05.03.22 / Turan: The Narimanov District Court chose a preventive measure in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months against Elshan Abbasov, his lawyer Neymat Karimli told Turan.
Abbasov was charged under Art. 234.4.3 (large-scale drug trafficking). Under this article, he faces a prison sentence of 5 to 12 years.—03B06-

Baku/05.03.22/Turan: Elshan Abbasov, a member of the Muslim Unity Movement, was detained on March 3,at about 5.30 pm near the place of work by persons in civilian clothes and taken away in an unknown direction. His relatives do not know the reasons for the persecution of the activist, told the activists of the Movement.
According to relatives, only today they managed to learn that Abbasov is being held in the Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. However, the detainee is prevented from calling family members who are not informed of the reason for the detention.
According to civil society activists, Abbasov had previously been convicted twice for defending the rights of believers. So, he was imprisoned for a year for participating in a protest against the ban on wearing the hijab in schools in October 2012.
In 2017, Abbasov was arrested on trumped-up charges of illegal possession of drugs and weapons and sentenced to 2.5 years in prison.
Activists claim that Abbasov, on the contrary, conducts educational work against the spread of drugs among young people, organizes Koran courses.
