The investigation into the death of Mehman Galandarov continues

Baku / 174.07.17 / Turan: The Prosecutor General's Office continues the preliminary investigation into the case of Mehman Galandarov, and depending on the results, a decision will be taken within the law, reads the message of the Prosecutor General's Office of the country. It should be recalled that on the fact of Galandarov's death in the pre-trial detention center, the Sabunchu district prosecutor's office of Baku filed a lawsuit on April 28 under the Article 125 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (bringing to suicide), and on 1 May the investigation department of the Baku Prosecutor's Office continued the investigation.

The message of the Prosecutor General's Office was sent to the public Preventive Response Group (PRG), formed for public monitoring of the investigation into the death of blogger Mehman Galandarov in pre-trial detention center No. 1 of Kurdakhani. The PRG sent a letter to the Prosecutor General's Office on 2 May, in which it expressed doubts about the version of Galandarov's suicide. The letter stated that on February 7 Galandarov held a political protest action in front of the monument to H.Aliyev in Baku, and then was arrested on charges of possession of drugs. After his arrest, he was tortured by the police.

The PRG draws attention to the fact that the Penitentiary Service initially denied the death of Galandarov, and then declared suicide. This was done after the secret burial of the deceased.

Galandarov was a civil activist and participated in many anti-government actions. He lived in Tbilisi for some time, and when on September 26, 2016 a referendum was held in Azerbaijan to extend the presidential term, Galandarov organized an action in front of the embassy in Tbilisi with the slogan: "We do not want a king!"

Later he took part in Tbilisi in the action under the slogan: "With the holiday of slaves!", dedicated to the protection of the rights of Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov, convicted in Azerbaijan after they wrote a slogan of the same content on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. -0-
