Baku / 19.08.20 / Turan: At today's trial in the Nizami district court in the case of the opposition politician Tofig Yagublu, an operative of the 24th branch of the Nizami district police department Elkhan Jafarov gave testimonies as a witness.

He confirmed his testimony during the preliminary investigation that Yagublu hit the "victim" with a screwdriver.

When the lawyer asked him what he saw, with what Yagublu “hit the victim,” the witness could not answer. When asked whether Yagublu had a screwdriver, the witness said that he did not understand what was the talk was about. The lawyers petitioned to ask the mobile operator for information about whether the witness's mobile phone was in the area of the incident at the time of the incident. The lawyers also asked to bring the investigator in charge of the case as a witness. However, both applications were rejected.

The judge appointed the next hearing on August 21. However, the lawyers asked to postpone the process due to employment in other cases. The judge did not change his decision. Yagublu protested this, stating that he wants all three lawyers to participate in the trial. Today, public and political activists and journalists were again barred from the trial.

* On March 22, a parked car in which Tofig Yagublu was sitting was driven by a car driven by citizen Elkhan Jabrailov. After that, Jabrailov entered into a fight with Yagublu, accusing him of the accident. The Nizami district police filed a lawsuit  under the Article 221.3 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism using objects as weapons). Yagublu himself and his colleagues called the incident a provocation in order to condemn the oppositionist for his criticism of the government on social networks. International human rights organizations condemned the arrest of Yagublu. Yagublu was previously sentenced to three years in 2013 on charges of inciting riots in Ismayilli. He was also arrested on October 19, 2019 for participating in an uncoordinated National Council protest and was tortured by the police. -06B--
