Verdict on Khadija Ismayilova at Elman Hasanov`s Suit Appealed to Supreme Court
The sentence on the journalist Khadija Ismayilova at the lawsuit of the former opposition member Elman Hasanov (Turkoglu) was filed a cassation to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan on April 29. The journalist's lawyer Fariz Namazly told Turan.
The defense considers the claim unfounded and has asked the Supreme Court to make a verdict of acquittal, and to cancel the fine in the amount of AZN 2,500.
Recall that Elman Hasanov "on the recommendation" of law enforcement (as he himself admitted) filed a lawsuit, in which he claimed that Ismayilova insulted him. This stemmed from the publication of a document that he was an agent of the Ministry of National Security. However, in the document published by the journalist there was no name Hasanov. This document appeared in social networks two years ago and was published by a former officer of the National Security Ministry and now a political emigrant Ramin Naghiyev. However, on February 23, 2015 the Binagadi district court sentenced the journalist to a fine. By this time Ismayilova was already in custody on other charges, on the basis of which she subsequently was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison.
Amnesty International acknowledges Ismayilova a prisoner of conscience. -06D--
