Azerbaijan’s Quiet Demographic Shift Signals Deeper Social Change

Thousands of words used in the Azerbaijani language have been borrowed from Russian. Even though Azerbaijani equivalents exist, Russian-based expressions continue to be used at official and social levels. For example, words such as “uchot” (accounting record), “bukhgalteriya” (accounting), “yest” (is/there is), “voobshe” (in general), “tak” (so), “da” (yes), and many others. At the same time, despite historical influences, the Azerbaijani language has preserved its structure, and the current goal is to make it more standardized, functional, and competitive.

Azerbaijan continues to face systemic challenges in tackling domestic violence despite an established legal framework, with experts warning that official statistics reflect only a fraction of the problem and that institutional weaknesses limit effective protection for victims.

The State Service for Mobilization and Conscription of Azerbaijan reports that in the first quarter of 2026, disciplinary measures and organizational actions were taken against 27 employees (including 17 senior officials) for illegal activities and abuse of office. One employee was dismissed on negative grounds, while materials on 16 cases involving 34 individuals were submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office. Despite the fact that many employees of this body have faced criminal liability in recent years, violations appear to persist.
