Aydın Məmmədov

Aydın Məmmədov

In the autumn of 1979, Aydin Mammadov “plunged” into Azerbaijani literature from the side of criticism and turned enchanted poetry upside by being inspired by red flags. If the analogy falls into place, as “an elephant entered a jewelry store”. Linguists Kamil Veli, Kamal Abdulla, and Aydin Mammadov, directing the “steering wheel” of traditional criticism to poetics, skillfully dominated the situation they created.

Whichever chair he stepped on, he was still able to instill a different mood in the room with the “sound of a cricket” ringing in my ears. In the autumn of that year, I well remember his words in his speech at the “trial” of Movlud Suleymanli's novella “Mill” in the Writers' Union, "Why don't we pay attention to Tahmina, whom we see every day on the street, on the bus, on the subway, at work, and as soon as we see her in the pages of literature, we become guardians of morality and honor?"

Aydin Mammadov was a legendary linguist for us due to his work on agglutination in Turkic languages. As soon as was appointed as a consultant of Mammad Jafar, the academician-secretary of the Academy of Sciences, he worked tirelessly to open new pages in the field of Turkology. The magazine “Soviet Turkology" was published in Baku. The position of editor-in-chief of the magazine in Moscow was in fact a formal job. The magazine published in Baku was prepared for publication by the first deputy editor-in-chief. In the second half of the 1980s, Aydin Mammadov was appointed first deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine “Soviet Turkology" and revived the exhausted magazine.

Our friend Arif Acaloğlu, a graduate student of Yuri Lotman at the University of Tartu in Estonia, spoke about the Popular Fronts in the Baltic States when he was in Baku in June 1988, and Aydin Mammadov invited us to his room. The idea of establishing a Popular Front in Azerbaijan was also discussed with the participation of Rahim Aliyev and Shirindil Alishanov. It was agreed to establish the organization in the fall. However, due to the different nature of the processes in the autumn, it was not possible to implement the idea of the Popular Front in the composition gathered before the summer.

At that time, we were very close. I remember writing an article for the magazine "Azerbaijan" about Aydin Mammadov's book "Until Our Word Is Heard" with the encouragement of Mr. Arif Amrahoglu and the order of Vagif Yusifli. We both were coming to work early in the morning. As soon as he saw me at the other end of the corridor, he would raise and lower his hand and invite me to the room. After a short conversation, he would go down to the library. After work until noon, we would fill our giant bag with fruit from the Shushali market on Narimanov Avenue and go to the teahouse in Baksovet.

In 1990, he was elected an MP. I do not remember if there was any person in the country who is more logical than him. He often spoke in the Milli Majlis, the next morning he would definitely come to the magazine, listen to the discussions in the corridor about his speech, and leave after making new additions. Over the years, I have witnessed that he has left a deep mark everywhere: in science, politics, friendship…

Aydin Mammadov is not a person who needs to be studied by order or instruction. Liberal youth will definitely find him, study him, learn from him…

People have been killed in Azerbaijan since May 1920; by court order, exiled to Siberia, strangled in prison, shot in the forehead in the block of flats, in a car accident. The form of killing is not very important; however, it is a bitter situation that the threat of "killing" never abandons the country. I consider the death of Aydin Mammadov and my colleague Dilara Aliyeva in a car accident as one of those deaths that have taken place since 1937. I think that Isa Huseynov wrote about his and Dilara's death earlier in his novel "Ideal" with the motive of the "accidental" death of Madad Amirli. We met at the entrance of the Azerbaijan Hotel 20 days before his death, he also had a guest from Turkey, and we decided to go to Shaki in the coming days. I also heard the news of his death in one of the rooms of the Azerbaijan Hotel. I remember two people came from Ankara to investigate the cause of death. They went to Shaki; however, the traces of the accident were completely erased.

31 years after his death, I would like to reiterate that there is no need to study the identity of Aydin Mammadov by order and instruction. He is a person ahead of his time, and those who seek depth in science and politics will definitely discover Aydin Mammadov.

When Azerbaijan thinks of returning to the stage of becoming a nation again, Aydin will be one of the most needed personalities…
