"BP-Azerbaijan reports recovery of 200 billion cubic metres from Shah Deniz field
Baku/29.08.23/Turan: Last weekend, 26 August, a milestone result was achieved at the Shah Deniz field - it was recorded that the field has already given the country 200 billion cubic metres of gas.
As noted in the BP report, the 200-billion cubic metres of gas was achieved 16.5 years after the announcement of the start of production from this key field in the country and the commissioning of the South Caucasus Pipeline.
Note that the production from December 2006 marked the start of Phase 1 of the field's development, with gas being reliably supplied to markets in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
The next major phase of the Shah Deniz field development was launched in 2018.
The launch of the Shah Deniz-2 project gave Azerbaijan the opportunity to become one of the main gas suppliers to Europe for the first time in its energy history. Starting from December 2020, Shah Deniz gas will be transported to European markets, which allows diversifying the European energy market and enhancing Europe's energy security.
Overall, Shah Deniz-2 delivers an average of 16 billion cubic metres of gas annually to the Turkish and European markets through the Southern Gas Corridor.
"2023 is another landmark year for Shah Deniz. In the fourth quarter of this year, the eastern-northern part of the field is planned to be brought on stream, which will allow additional Shahdeniz-2 wells to be launched in the field"- reminds BP.
The Shah Deniz Alpha (11 wells) and Shah Deniz Bravo (14 wells) platforms are currently producing an average of 72.6 million cubic metres of gas per day.
Elkhan Mammadov, BP's Vice President for Operations in the Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey region, said: "As BP, we are proud of Shah Deniz. It is a huge world-class field, but at the same time one of the most challenging in terms of operation. However, despite the challenges we have faced in its development, we have managed to drill the most complex wells in one of the most challenging basins and build a world-class infrastructure to directly connect the field to regional and global markets".
All of this has been achieved safely, environmentally friendly and efficiently, he said: "Shah Deniz is a valuable project that is contributing to the energy transition of both BP and Azerbaijan as we move towards our goal of zero emissions.
We believe Shah Deniz has a great future ahead of it. We are currently drilling a new well in the "Pre-Fasila" formation below the existing pay zones in Shah Deniz. We hope that this well will create new development opportunities, supporting our plans to secure the long-term exploitation of the Shah Deniz field.-0-
