Kakageldy threatens Azerbaijan with International Court of Justice
The official Ashgabat represented by a deputy minister threatened Azerbaijan with the international court because of Baku's claims on the field Kapaz in the Caspian Sea.
Turkmenistan's position through the agency Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary (TDK) was stated by the Acting Minister of Oil and Gas Industry Kakageldi Abdyllaev on June 29.
Abdyllaev said that in 2008, during the visit of Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Azerbaijan, the two countries did not sign any agreements. At the same time, Turkmenistan put forward an initiative to solve the problem. "Unfortunately, these initiatives have not received a response from the Azerbaijani side," said the Acting Minister of Turkmenistan.
He also drew attention to the fact that "Turkmenistan has repeatedly called on Azerbaijan to stop work in the areas of the sea, the jurisdiction of which is not defined, namely in the fields of Omar and Osman (Azeri and Chirag fields - in the Azerbaijani version).
"In an effort to hide its illegal actions in the disputed territories, the Azerbaijani side is trying to prove its right and, at the same time, is violating the preliminary agreements reached," said Abdyllaev.
"In this situation, Turkmenistan has no choice but to turn to the International Court of Justice," he said.
Recall that two weeks ago a geological survey ship of Turkmenistan was driven away by an Azerbaijani border vessel from the Kapaz field, where it was conducting a survey.
This field is located at the junction of the maritime borders of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan and is a subject of the long-standing dispute between the two countries. Baku offered Ashgabat to start joint development of Kapaz, but Ashgabat believes it is its own field, as well as Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli, which have been developed by Azerbaijan since 1994. -02D-

Azerbaijan's financial standing continues to strengthen as the country's foreign currency reserves have surged to $71 billion as of January 1, 2025, according to the Ministry of Finance. This figure, which includes reserves held by the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan (SOFAZ) and the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), far exceeds the nation's external debt, which stands at a fraction of its reserves, specifically nearly 14 times less. This robust reserve position reflects Azerbaijan's fiscal stability and the government’s strategic economic management.
