Transportation of Transit Cargo Decreased
In January-April this year, the Transport Corridor TRACECA in transit through the territory of Azerbaijan transported 3 million 490.5 thousand tons of cargo. This is 19% less than in the four months of 2014, the State Statistics Committee told Turan.
The share of rail transport accounts for 1,167.1 thousand tons of transit goods. Railroad transit cargo declined by 26.4%. CJSC Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company carried out 2,323.4 thousand tons on East-West. The volume of traffic fell by 14.6%.
Despite the 19% decline in orders, revenues of transport on freight transport decreased by only 2.7% to $ 41 million 816.6 thousand manats. Of these, 26.3 million manats (+ 2.7%) accounted for the mariners.
Since the beginning of the project the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) the maximum amount of cargo through the territory of Azerbaijan was transported in 2003 - 8 million 284 thousand tons. In subsequent years, the volume of traffic has gradually reduced, and in 2011 it rose to the level of 7.8 million tons.
Azerbaijan has in recent years stepped up the potential of its transit opportunities. The new Baku sea port was built with the capacity of 15 million tons of liquid and 10 million tons of dry cargo, as well as a new terminal of the Baku International Airport. By the end of this year the commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad is expected. This route is planned for the international carriage of goods from Europe to China and back.
The TRACECA project is funded by the European Union for the development of a transport corridor from Europe through the Black Sea, the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea to the Central Asian countries. ----08B
