One Killed, 16 Injured in Explosion of Ship Chartered by SOCAR
Baku / 02.07.19 / Turan: At 23:30 on Monday in the port of Petkim (near Turkish Izmir) an explosion occurred on a tanker. As a result, 15 Italian citizens, one Romanian citizen and one Petkim worker were injured. One Italian citizen Roberto Montegurdia lost his life.
The explosion caused a fire on the ship Synzania, where oil products were pumped. The cause of the explosion is still unknown. Numerous teams of firefighters and rescuers were sent to the scene, according to Turkish media.
The port of Petkim belongs to the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). The Italian vessel was chartered by the subsidiary SOCAR Turkey.
No information on the incident has been published on the SOCAR website yet.
In turn, the Turkish media, citing local authorities, reported that the explosion occurred at the time of loading propylene on the tanker.
In a written statement made by Petkim, it is stated that the fire occurred for an unknown reason during the refueling of liquid hydrocarbons onto the Synzania ship under the Italian flag at Petkim Fifth Pier at about 23.20.
The displacement of the tanker Synzania is about 4 thousand tons. Local prosecutors opened an investigation into the incident. -02 / 06D-
