The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025, held under the patronage of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, began on January 12, focusing on addressing global sustainability challenges and fostering transformational change. The event, titled "Shaping the Future: Accelerating Sustainable Progress," runs until January 18 and emphasizes the role of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and renewable energy in tackling pressing environmental issues while unlocking economic opportunities worth approximately $10 trillion. A dedicated investment fund will be formed through governmental, international, and private contributions, enabling a broad range of projects aimed at sustainable development and combating climate change.
The week commenced with the 14th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly on January 12–13, bringing together global policymakers and experts to discuss international renewable energy strategies. The annual Global Climate Finance meeting on January 13 highlighted the need to mobilize financial resources to support worldwide climate initiatives.
An ambitious tone was set during the official opening ceremony on January 14, followed by the highly anticipated ADSW Summit, which continues until January 15. The summit gathers 13 heads of state, over 140 ministers, and numerous business leaders and innovators to explore transformative strategies for sustainable development. Leaders from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan joined the event, reflecting their commitment to advancing green agendas.
More than 34 sessions featuring over 70 speakers addressed critical topics, including energy transitions, climate risk modeling, food and water security, and sustainable development financing mechanisms. The World Future Energy Summit, a flagship event of ADSW, showcased cutting-edge innovations from over 55 startups and entrepreneurs, highlighting the intersection of technology and sustainability through artificial intelligence and renewable energy solutions.
Other key events included the Green Hydrogen Summit and the Women in Sustainability Forum, which facilitated discussions on practical strategies and inclusive progress. Youth engagement remained central, with initiatives such as Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S) promoting partnerships between governments, businesses, and civil society to empower the next generation.
