Armenians restrict water flow to Sugovushan reservoir –Ecofront
Baku/20.12.22/Turan: Separatists in Karabakh not only illegally exploit mines, but also create obstacles to the use of the region's water resources, the message of the Azerbaijani public organization Ecofront. Thus, the channels of the rivers flowing into the Sugovushan reservoir are redirected to the Sargsang reservoir, which is under the control of the separatists.
In particular, in the upper reaches of the Toragay River, on the slopes of Murovdag, 3 spillways have been installed. From there, the water is piped to Sarsang. At the same time, the volume of water in Sugovushan is declining.
The water resources of Karabakh are much more than the 100,000 people living there need. Therefore, the only goal of the separatists is to create a water shortage in Azerbaijan.
The use of Sarsang against Azerbaijan was recognized at the international level when in 2016 PACE adopted a special resolution on this issue. Thus, at the plenary session of the PACE session on January 26, a resolution was adopted: “Deliberate water deprivation of the inhabitants of the frontline regions of Azerbaijan”, prepared by the Bosnian deputy Milica Markovic.
In addition, the lack of regular maintenance of the dam for more than 20 years has made Sarsang potentially dangerous for the entire region, the resolution says. The PACE resolution calls for the immediate withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces to provide access to the Sarsang reservoir for engineers and hydrologists and conduct a detailed survey on the spot.
In addition, the need for international control over the state of the Sarsang and Madagiz dams, the schedule of water releases in the autumn-winter period is noted. The PACE resolution calls on the Armenian authorities to stop using water resources "as an instrument of political influence or an instrument of pressure."
However, Armenia ignored these calls, and every summer blocked the flow of water from Sarsang in order to create a drought, and in autumn and winter, on the contrary, turned on the water when there was no need for irrigation. -06D-
