Azerbaijan Becomes Member of UNESCO Committee on Intangible Heritage
Baku / 07.06.18 / Turan: Azerbaijan was elected a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
On June 6, the 7th General Assembly of the member countries of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Organization was held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Within the framework of the session, elections were held for seats vacated by the Intergovernmental Commission for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Two candidates in the second group were nominated by 7 states - Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Macedonia. As a result of a wide propaganda campaign, Azerbaijan was elected a member of the committee, gaining the largest number of votes (90) among the candidates. Poland was elected to the other place with 52 votes, the document says. -02D-

On January 13, the trial in the case of public activist Nijat Ibrahim continued in the Baku Serious Crimes Court under the chairmanship of Judge Aygun Gurbanova. The trial was suspended after Ibrahim, in protest against the illegal arrest, began banging his head against the "aquarium cage", trying to commit suicide. The International Committee of Concerned Scholars (ICS) has appealed to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, requesting his assistance in securing the release of the arrested researcher, Igbal Abilov. The ICS expressed concern that Abilov's arrest "may be related to his research on ethnic minorities in Azerbaijan, conducted in collaboration with scholars from Armenia."
