Call to Impose Sanctions against Azerbaijani Officials Finds Support
Baku / 05.08.20 / Turan: Member of the European Parliament from Portugal Isabel Santos supports the proposal to impose sanctions by the European Union against Azerbaijani officials guilty of human rights violations.
Until 2019, she chaired the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Democracy and Human Rights.
In an interview with Voice of America radio, she welcomed the call of the Vice President of the Social Democrats faction in the European Parliament, Katy Peary, to impose sanctions against the repressive authorities of Azerbaijan.
“We are concerned about the reliable information about the cruel torture of Fuad Gahramanli by the law enforcement agencies of Azerbaijan,” she said, noting that she closely monitors the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.
“There have been systematic intimidation, arrests and pressure on the opposition,” Santos said.
Local and international laws are regularly violated in Azerbaijan, and the international community cannot tolerate this any longer.
“These sanctions are not directed against Azerbaijan as a whole, but against Azerbaijani officials who are brutally suppressing the political opposition and civil society,” she said.
Let us remind you that a new wave of repressions against the opposition began after the demonstration on July 15. Since then, 42 members of the Popular Front Party have been arrested, and some of them are accused of attempting to seize power. -16B-
