Court leaves NIDA activist in detention

Baku Appeals Court rejects an appeal of a member of the NIDA Youth Movement, Rashadata Akhundov requesting to change the measure of restraint on house arrest.

According to his lawyer Namik Hajiyev, the judge upheld the decision of the Court of First Instance on the arrest for the investigation period.

Questioned about the release on bail, the lawyer said that in Azerbaijan this provision is not actually used, despite being provided in the legislation.

The lawyer also told of the violation of the Article 5 (freedom and right to privacy) of the European Convention on Human Rights in relation to Rashadat Akhundov. The lawyer is going to send a complaint to the European Court in this regard.

Rashadat Akhundov himself stated that detention is not necessary, and the arrest was politically motivated.

Rashadat Akhundov is one of the seven members of the NIDA Movement arrested on charges of possession of explosives, drugs, and unrest. On March 10, they took part in the action against the soldiers' deaths in central Baku. Some of them were arrested previously, and some were arrested after the action.  Amnesty International has established them as prisoners of conscience and calls for their immediate release. -16B04-
