Court of Appeal keeps Azer Gasymly in custody
On 21 January the Baku Court of Appeal considered an appeal of Director of the Institute of Political Management Azer Gasymly. He appealed against the refusal to place him under house arrest.
Lawyer Aghil Laij told Turan that at the hearing Gasymly claimed that he had not committed any crime, but on the contrary had been the victim of a crime himself and called his arrest ‘illegal’. However, the court rejected the complaint.
Samira Gasymly, the political scientist's wife, said the family had no expectations of a fair trial.
‘We know why the authorities arrested Azer Gasymly. If he was arrested, there is no intention to release him quickly.
On the recommendation of the lawyer it is necessary to fulfil the procedures of passing through all judicial instances of Azerbaijan to then apply to the European Court. We are well aware that decisions on Azer's case are adopted not in the legal, but in the political plane,’ the wife said.
Head of the Institute of Political Management Azer Gasymly was detained on 8 December last year. He was charged under Article 182.2.3 of the Criminal Code (extortion through threats with the use of force).
