DEVAMM condemned MP Sadygov for xenophobia

The Center for Protection of Freedom of Conscience and Religion

(DEVAMM) condemned the Azerbaijani MP, editor in chief of the official newspaper Azerbaijan Bakhtiyar Sadigov for xenophobic statement. Outcry from the human rights organization aroused by Sadigov's statement during the March 7 conference on " Freedom of religion , missionary activity and media ", organized by the Press Council.
Dissatisfaction was caused among the believers in particular by Sadigov's words: "... Return of Azerbaijani women to the hijab in the 21st century is a big mistake. But ongoing measures produce results. See, in this room there are no women in hijab. It is our success. This is the result of work carried out by the media."
DEVAMM regards this statement as a manifestation of xenophobia and religious intolerance.

While at all levels it is claimed on ensuring religious freedom , protection of the atmosphere of tolerance, the MP commits attacks of religious intolerance. From the statement of the MP it can be concluded that the authorities are insincere with the Declaration on Freedom of Conscience.

Thereby the MP crosses the activities of the state to protect religious freedom.

The statement also indicated that the periodic steps to ban the azan (Muslim religious song calling the audience to pray in mosques) by the officials, destruction of mosques, restrictions on the hijab create a fertile ground for religious radicalism.

DEVAMM also draws attention to the fact that government agencies do not disavow the statements made by Sadigov, or explain that he expressed his personal opinion and not the position of the state.

DEVAMM believes that the development of religious enlightenment, freedom of conscience and religion are the only way of forming healthy moral atmosphere necessary for the strengthening of the statehood. - 05D06 -
