ECHR Recognizes Violation of Rights to Free Elections of Three Azerbaijani Citizens
Baku / 11.07.19 / Turan: On July 11, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) satisfied the complaints of three Azerbaijani citizens in connection with the violation of their rights to free elections.
Ikhtiyar Abdalov, Ibrahim Ahmedzadeh and Tariel Shirinli complained that they were not allowed to participate in the 2010 parliamentary elections from Baku, Imishli and Sumgayit, respectively.
District election commissions refused to register them as candidates for deputies due to the lack of reliable voter signatures in their support.
They appealed these decisions to the courts. Despite the fact that the courts granted their complaints, since these decisions were taken a few days before the vote, they could not conduct a campaign. The applicants insisted on postponing the elections in their constituencies, but this was not done.
The ECHR decided each applicant should be paid EUR 7,500 as compensation for moral damages and another 2,200 euros for reimbursement of legal expenses of Shirinli and Ahmedzadeh and 1,400 euros for Abdalov. -06D--
