ECHR Satisfies Ilgar Mammadovs Second Complaint against Azerbaijan
Baku / 16.11.17 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) announced the second decision in the case of Ilgar Mammadov, the Azerbaijani opposition leader, the convicted leader of the REAL movement.
Thus, the Strasbourg Court granted his complaint against the verdict, recognizing the violation of his rights under Article 6 (the right to a fair trial) of the European Convention of Human Rights and ordered to pay pecuniary compensation in the amount of EUR 10,000 to him.
Turan was informed about this by his lawyer Fuad Agayev. This is the second decision of the ECHR in the Mammadov case.
The REAL movement leader, Ilgar Mammadov, was arrested on charges of organizing unrest in the Ismayilli region in January 2013 and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
However, the European Court of Human Rights found his arrest unlawful and politically motivated, deciding that he should be immediately released. However, this decision, adopted in May 2014, has not yet been implemented.
On October 25, 2017, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe officially notified Azerbaijan of the start of legal actions related to the need to ensure the implementation of the ECHR decision in the case of Ilgar Mammadov. The result of these procedures could be the imposition of sanctions against Azerbaijan, if Mammadov is not released. -06B-
