Emin Huseynov Allowed to Leave for Switzerland
On the night of Saturday, the journalist and human rights defender Emin Huseynov was able to leave the Swiss embassy in Baku and leave Azerbaijan. According to the Swiss newspaper Zurder Zeitung, Huseynov left Baku, accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Burkhalter, said the Foreign Ministry of this country.
According to the same source, Burkhalter came to the opening ceremony of the European Games only under this condition.
Recall that Emin Huseynov was hiding in the Embassy of Switzerland 10 months after the authorities opened a criminal case and wanted to arrest him.
As well as a dozen other human rights activists, he was prosecuted for fraud, tax evasion and so on.
According to diplomatic sources, the release of Huseynov was preceded by long negotiations with the authorities of Azerbaijan. Burkhalter held private talks with President Aliyev.
Currently Huseynov has been granted a visa until September, after which he will be able to decide for himself whether to ask for asylum or not, the representative of the Swiss authorities said.
Emin Huseynov is one of the civil society activists whose release was demanded by international organizations on the eve of the European Games. -02D-
