Employees of Baku Office of Radio Liberty Summoned for Questioning in Droves

After a search of the Baku office of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty, removal of the equipment and documentation and the sealing of the office, staff of this radio is in droves summoned for questioning to the Prosecutor General. This is stated in the report of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty.

"Prosecutors are trying to question the journalists even at night. Despite the fact that the journalists ask for time to ensure the participation of their lawyers, they are threatened to be driven to the prosecutor by force," the statement says.

Several employees, including those working in the regions of Azerbaijan, were summoned to the prosecutor's office and interrogated.

Lawyer Yalcin Imanov expressed surprise at the hasty collective involvement of journalists in the investigation.

At the same time he pointed to difficulty of the conclusion of contracts with lawyers and preparation of powers of attorney for them due to the weekend.

"To prepare all this takes time. I was called by the investigator of the Investigation Department for Serious Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office Igbal Huseynov. I told him that attempts to interrogate journalists without counsel gives us reason to believe that the prosecution has no legal intentions. So we asked for time to provide lawyers for the people. So far we have managed to postpone the questioning of the journalists before the start of next week," the lawyer Imanov said. -0-
