Erdogan Closes Mass Media En Masse
The Turkish authorities have closed 16 TV channels, three news agencies, 23 radio stations, 45 newspapers, 15 magazines and 29 publishers after the coup attempt, the official Resmi Gazete said.
It is noted that this decision was taken within the framework of the state of emergency, which was introduced in Turkey for three months on July 20. In particular, the authorities have closed the TV channels Baris TV, Bugun TV, Can Erzincan TV, Dunya TV, Hira TV, Irmak TV, Canal 124, Canal Turk, MC TV, Mehtap TV, Merkur TV, Samanyolu Haber, Samanyolu TV, SRT TV, Tuna Shopping TV and Yumurcak TV, and the news agencies Cihan, Muhabir and SEM.
About 100 media workers have been arrested. In addition, mass arrests of people suspected of involvement in the coup attempt are underway. At the moment, the number of detainees has exceeded 15 thousand, including more than 10 thousand military men. This was stated by Interior Minister Alu Efka, Reuters reported, citing CNN Turk.
The authorities claim that the coup was attended by 1.5% of the personnel of the Armed Forces – 8,651 servicemen. At the disposal of the rebels were 246 armored vehicles, 74 tanks and three ships. Such data were announced by the Turkish General Staff.
After the suppression of the coup extensive cleaning began in the state agencies of Turkey. The state of emergency has been introduced for three months and the European Convention on Human Rights has been suspended. The authorities want to bring back the death penalty. -02D-
