EU Proposes Initialing New Agreement with Azerbaijan in June
Baku / 19.02.20 / Turan: On February 18, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with the EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varheili within the framework of a working visit to Brussels.
During the meeting, which took place in an atmosphere of mutually beneficial partnership, they discussed the course of negotiations on a draft new agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU, which will determine the legal basis for further cooperation.
In this context, the current state of trade negotiations and the meeting with the EU Trade Commissioner were raised.
Varheili noted the importance of intensifying negotiations on a draft new agreement.
He proposed to agree on an agreement for the Eastern Partnership Summit, which is scheduled for June 2020 in Brussels, and initialed it as part of this event.
During the meeting, relations of the strategic partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan in the energy sector, and projects carried out by Baku to ensure European energy security, including the Southern Gas Project and its further diversification, were also discussed.
To discuss issues of expanding cooperation in a bilateral and multilateral format, Mammadyarov invited Varheili to visit Azerbaijan.

In late October, Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) reported that Russia has deployed over 7,000 North Korean soldiers to areas near Ukraine, transported by at least 28 military flights.
