"We are awaiting clarification from the Armenian side, and then we will be able to assess what will be the consequences," said the spokesperson of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, RIA Novosti reported.

The EU leaders and the leaders of member countries of the EU Eastern Partnership will have a meeting, in which several countries, including Armenia, are expected to initial the Association Agreement and the agreement "On a deep and comprehensive free trade area."

However, on 3 September, after negotiations with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan expressed his country's decision to join the Customs Union.

Commenting on the decision, the Armenian political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan said that dependence on Russia in security deprives Armenia of ability to maneuver.

Meanwhile, today at the residence of the President of Armenia in Yerevan a protest was held against the entry to the Customs Union and three members were taken to the police.

The participants claimed that the structure set up by Russia basically means attempt to revive the USSR. In protest, the demonstrators came with the Soviet Union ice cream and tied with red cloths around their necks, resembling pioneer ties. They demanded the President's resignation, chanting, "Go away."

The protest was attended by representatives of opposition party "Heritage" David Sanasaryan, who told reporters that they would not allow the illegitimate President to make decisions alone and to jeopardize the sovereignty of Armenia.

After that the protesters tried to cross the road and go directly to the building of the residence, and a hassle broke out between them and the police. Three activists, including Sanasaryan, were subjected to detention. -02D-
