Ex-Interior Minister detained in Sheki
Baku / 30.01.19 / Turan: Former Minister of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan, Iskender Hamidov, was detained on January 30 in Sheki (north-west of the country) by members of the local police department.
Hamidov himself told Turan that he arrived on Wednesday in Sheki to participate in the mourning ceremony of the mother of the former Defense Minister of Azerbaijan Rahim Gaziyev. However, at the entrance to the city he was detained and he was held at the district police station for about two hours.
"The detention was not related to any violation of the law. They began to openly ask me about the reasons for criticism of the authorities and the creation of a new social movement," said Hamidov. He was later released, without any explanation.
It was not possible to get comments from the Sheki District Police Department.
In 1992-93 Hamidov headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan. Later he founded the National Democratic Party. In 1995 he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
Recently, Hamidov re-joined active political activities, and on January 26 he became one of the founders of a public structure called the National Movement of Azerbaijan. -06D--
