Experts and Politicians on Results of Putin"s Visit

Politicians and experts ambiguously perceive the results of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Baku.

"Both sides were interested in this visit, especially Ilham Aliyev. However, the parties have not received what they expected from the visit,” Isa Gambar, leader of “Musavat”, told Turan.

Being asked what they discussed behind closed doors, Gambar said the visit clearly showed the dependence of  Ilham Aliyev on outside influence.

The Kremlin wants to involve Azerbaijan in its Eurasian projects, and Baku is looking for support from Moscow on the eve of the election. "I think that these issues were discussed behind closed doors," said the leader of "Musavat".

Can the Kremlin provide such support for Ilham Aliyev? With this question Gambar said, that "full support is not possible, because Ilham Aliyev does not fulfill all the wishes of Moscow."

The head of the research center "East-West", Arastun Orujlu, also believes that Putin could not achieve during the visit all that he desired.

"The results of the visit for Azerbaijan are positive. The makeup of the delegation showed that Putin wants to extract the maximum from bilateral cooperation, and above all, material dividends.

It can be assumed that the main goal is to involve Azerbaijan in Eurasian and the customs union, but most of Azerbaijan's foreign trade is in other countries of the world. "So joining this Union is unrealistic,"  he said.

However, Ilham Aliyev manages to balance between the interests of the West and Russia, which ensures the security of his regime. Full reorientation to Russia is impossible, even despite significant contracts in the energy and involvement of Russian companies in the energy sector, he said.

As for the discussions behind closed doors, according to Orujlu, Moscow believes that the interest of the West and the USA in the region has weakened, and they should take advantage of this. "But I think that the reckoning of Moscow is not real, unless there is the question of energy supplies to Europe and the western markets as a whole. This means less dependence of the West on Russia," said the expert.

He is also convinced that the West will never give up its interests in Azerbaijan because of the proximity to the region of the Middle East. -03B-
