Azerbaijani citizen Farid Safarli has been released from an Iranian prison and returned to his homeland.

This was stated in a joint statement released on the evening of January 20 by the State Security Service (SSS) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.

“In accordance with the instructions of the President of Azerbaijan, citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan Safarli Farid Gabil oglu, detained in Iran in 2023, was returned to Azerbaijan on January 18 this year within the framework of international legal cooperation,” the joint press release of the two agencies says.

After undergoing a medical examination, Safarli was reunited with his family, the statement continues.

* Azerbaijani citizen Farid Safarli, who studied in Germany, disappeared in Iran in March 2023, where he had come to meet with his acquaintance, with whom he studied together. Later, Iranian authorities confirmed his arrest on charges of espionage.

The charge was subsequently reclassified as “intent to commit espionage.” In August 2023, Safarli was sentenced to two years in prison. In November, Iran's appeals court upheld the sentence.
