Baku/01.01.24/Turan: A group of Azerbaijani scientists working at foreign universities appealed to President Ilham Aliyev asking to release of Professor of Economics, opposition politician Gubad Ibadoglu.

The appeal of 12 Azerbaijani scientists was adopted on the occasion of the Day of World Azerbaijanis, celebrated on December 31. 

The authors note that "Ibadoglu, who has been contained for more than 160 days in Baku jail, suffers from a number of serious diseases - aortic aneurysm, high level of diabetes, experiences severe pain in connection with problems of the vertebral-spinal system. 

The authors point to Ibadoglu's fame in the scientific circles of Europe and the United States. "Even before his invitation to the London School of Economics in 2021, since the late 1990s, he had taught and research activities at various times at the Warsaw School of Economics, the Central European University, leading scientific centers and universities in the United States - North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke, Princeton and Rutgers, and lectured at the British University of Oxford. 

He is the author of about 20 books and scientific articles in the field of economic models, good management, effective use of income from natural resources, which are an important scientific source for researchers in these areas," the appeal says. 

Ibadoglu was also a member of the international board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a member of the Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Strategic Group of the International Coalition, a member of the EU Eastern Partnership Civil Society Platform, conducted research for UNICEF, the World Bank, the EU and the Asian Development Bank and the EBRD, the IMF. 

Carrying out scientific and pedagogical activities abroad, Ibadoglu, at various international events informed the audience about his country's position on the Karabakh conflict, exposed the lies of Armenian propaganda. 

In 2021 Ibadoglu appealing to U.S. President Joe Biden, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the heads of the Senate and the House of Representatives, demanded the cancellation of the 907th Amendment to the Freedom Support Act, which discriminates against Azerbaijan.

Gubad Ibadoglu is a co-author of the book published in 2023 in the United States "The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Исторические и политические перспективы".
