Hilal Mammadov Refuses to Participate in the Court Trial
The trial, in the case of the chief editor of "Talysh sado", Hilal Mammadov, began in the Serious Crimes Court chaired by Azer Orujov.
According to his brother, Sabahaddin Mammadov, Hilal Mamedov demanded an open trial. Otherwise, he threatened not to participate. However, the judge refused to grant the petition, and declared the trial would take place behind closed doors, after which everyone left the room.
Sabahaddin Mammadov also said lawyers would not attend the trial scheduled for today at 14:00.
Hilal Mammadov was arrested on 21 June, 2012. He was charged under Articles 274 (treason), 283.2.2 (inciting religious and ethnic hatred), 234.4.3 (storage and distribution of drugs.) If Mammadov is found gulity, he could be imprisoned for 15 years. International human rights organizations consider Hilal Mammadov a prisoner of conscience. -16B04-
