Human rights activists call on the OSCE to not be blind to ugliness

The Community Alliance "Azerbaijan without political prisoners" intends to appeal to Amnesty International to recognize Deputy Chairman of "Musavat" Tofig Yagublu and the head of the movement REAL, Ilgar Mamedov, as prisoners of conscience. This was stated on Thursday in the Media Center by the coordinator of the Alliance, Oktay Gyulalyev.

The meeting was devoted to the protection of rights of persons arrested in the events at the Bina Mall on January 19 and in Ismayilli on January 23-24.

"Civil society has sounded the alarm. Recent arrests prove that the number of political prisoners in the country is growing. To stop these arrests, in the near future we will establish a working group to protect the rights of persons arrested," said Gyulalyev.

He also proposed a special forum on the matter involving human rights defenders, lawyers, journalists, civil society and international organizations.

Lawyer Asabali Mustafayev, giving a legal assessment of arrests from recent events in Bina and Ismayilli, said that the arrests were expected. He also referred to the failure of the PACE deputies to admit the report by Strasser on political prisoners in Azerbaijan. The lawyer believes that the PACE deputies had better work, because they are uncomfortable with the situation in Azerbaijan.

He also proposed to set up a special group to help detainees.

Speaking further, the former political prisoners expressed concern over the situation created in the country. They offered the OSCE Baku office to "enhance the sense of responsibility and not turn a blind eye to what is happening." -16C04-
