Ilgar Mamedov Decides to Run for MP
The imprisoned leader of the Republican Alternative (REAL) Ilgar Mamedov intends to take part in by-elections to the Milli Majlis on the 90th constituency, which is set for June 18. This was written on Facebook by the Executive Secretary of REAL Natig Jafarli.
According to him, against Mamedov there is no enforceable judgment, as the case was returned to the Sheki Court of Appeal, and therefore the REAL leader can run for parliament. For, according to the law, an accused person has the right to stand for election.
Mamedov was arrested in connection with the unrest in the town of Ismayilli in January 2013 and sentenced to 7 years in prison on charges of organizing mass riots. The European Court of Human Rights declared his arrest illegal and called for his immediate release. The Azerbaijani Supreme Court returned the case for retrial to the appellate court. Elections to the 90th Agdash District will be held in connection with the cancellation of the results of voting in the parliamentary elections of November 1, 2015. -16D-
