Iran was kicked out of a UN Commission dedicated to women’s rights on Wednesday following the U.S.’ push to have the country excluded, TURAN's Washington correspondent reports.

29 members of the UN Economic and Social Council voted for a resolution that was brought by Washington to remove Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women for the rest of its term, which started this year and ends in 2026. 16 members abstained from the vote and 8 opposed.

In a statement, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the “historic vote” was a rebuke to the Iranian government's “systemic repression of women and girls” as protests continue to roil the country.

Demonstrators took to the streets in September after the death of a woman detained by Iran’s morality police.

The Biden administration also said it is coalescing partners and allies against the Iranian regime for its abuses against its own people, its support for Russia in Moscow’s war against Ukraine, and its destabilizing actions in the Middle East.
