Ivanishvili: Parliamentary Elections in Georgia in 2020 to Be Held According to Proportional System
Baku / 24.06.19 / Turan: Parliamentary elections in Georgia in 2020 will be held according to a proportional system and a zero electoral barrier. The leader of the ruling party Georgian Dream Bidzina Ivanishvili said this at a briefing in Tbilisi today.
Thus, the authorities gave way to the demands of the opposition, which has recently demanded a transition to a proportional system, that is, the election of deputies to parliament only by party lists.
On June 13, representatives of 20 opposition parties submitted 300,000 signatures to the Georgian parliament demanding the transition to the proportional electoral system from 2020 - that is, cancellation of the election of deputies under the majority system in the next parliamentary elections. Earlier, the ruling party stated that it was not going to consider this requirement.
The demand for a transition to the proportional system is heard every day at the thousands of protest actions that take place every day near the Georgian parliament after the riots in Tbilisi began on June 20.
According to observers, this decision is unlikely to calm the protesters demanding the resignation of the government and the holding of early parliamentary elections. -02D-
