Human Rights Activists on Latest Cases of Harassment of Journalists
Baku / 24.06.19 / Turan: The Union for the Freedom of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan (UFPPA) made a statement in which it condemned the latest cases of criminal prosecution of journalists in the country.
The organization"s statement said that the editor of the Realliq.info site Ikram Rahimov on June 12 was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison on charges of extortion by threats.
The UFPPA notes that Rahimov was arrested on October 27, 2018, several hours after the publication of a sharply critical statement addressed to the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Ali Hasanov.
Earlier, Rahimov published articles on the corruption of high-ranking officials in charge of the press.
On the day of the Rahimov sentence, the founder and editor of the information sites Xeberman.com and Press-az.com, Polad Aslanov, was also detained.
He was charged with treason, and the court chose a measure of restraint in the form of arrest for 4 months against him.
Members of his family stated that the journalist was being persecuted because of the publication of articles about bribery on the part of intelligence officers. According to them, it is for this reason that a year ago he was drafted into the army, despite the fact that he was declared unfit for military service.
The UFPPA regards these cases as "continuing repression against journalists" and "suppressing press freedom and expression guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights".
The UFPPA recognized Rahimov and Aslanov as political prisoners, and called on the authorities to release them immediately.
In total, there are 7 journalists in the list of political prisoners of the UFPPA.
* The UFPPA was established in November 2018 by human rights activists Leyla Yunus, Elshan Hasanov, Hilal Mammadov, and the head of the Union of Intellectuals of Azerbaijan Eldaniz Guliyev. -06D--
